The Sunshine Coast is part of the Southwestern British Columbia mainland that is separated from Vancouver by Howe Sound. There are no roads connecting the Sunshine Coast with the rest of the lower mainland. You have to take a ferry to get there.

Powell_River is sometimes included in the Sunshine Coast, but most locals tend to think of the Sunshine Coast as being only the Sechelt Peninsula.

The southern portion of the sunshine coast is almost a bedroom community of Vancouver. There are a number of people who commute to Vancouver on a regular basis, in this area.

Get In

Access from Vancouver to Sunshine Coast is primarily by BC Ferries (http://www.bcferries.com). The ferry out of Horseshoe Bay leaves every about 2 1/2 hours and it is a 50 minute ferry ride to the Sechelt Peninsula.

The ferry fare to get on the Sechelt Peninsula is a return fare, so that you do not have to pay to leave.

Malaspina Coach Lines (http://suncoastcentral.com/transit6.html) operates a twice daily bus service from Vancouver to Powell River that includes stops in all the major communities of the Sunshine Coast.

Get around

The automobile is the easiest way of getting around the Sunshine Coast. Car rentals are available at a number of locations on the Sunshine Coast, but it is generally considerably cheaper in Vancouver.

See

  • Skookumchuk Narrows Provincial Park is the site of some of the strongest and most spectacular currents in western North America. These narrows occurs where the water enters into the Sechelt Inlet. There can be as much as a 2m difference in sea level between Sechelt Inlet and the Jervis inlet. The water can be moving at speeds of up to 16 knots and creates standing waves up to 1.5m and whirlpools. Access to the best place to view the narrows is about a 1.5 hour hike from the parking lot. This is located near the Earls Cove ferry terminal.
