Fukui means "lucky well". It is directly across the Sea of Japan from Korea. Its harbors are frequented by Russian and Korean cargo vessels. Fukui is well know for its beef grown in the Wakasa area of Western Fukui Prefecture.

The dialect most spoken in Fukui now is the Kansai dialet, however several smaller dialects still persist from long ago. The Mihama dialect is like many country dialects in Chubu. The northern Fukui dialect is a very distant cousin to modern standard Japanese spoken mainly by the elderly.
