When Cape Town was founded in 1652, the first settlers soon moved a bit inland to erect some farms for their own needs. When more and more settlers from Germany, France and the Netherlands came, they soon discovered that the hills in this region were ideal as vineyards. Some of them were experienced winemakers and they soon started to plant a few plants they brought over from Europe. This was the beginning of the South African wine industry and today South Africas wines are known and treasured all over the world.

Be sure to visit the beautiful towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek and to taste some wine at one of the local wine farms.
The University of Stellenbosch (http://www.sun.ac.za) is situated here.
Of course, some good wine...
Safety is not as much an issue as in other parts of South Africa, but that does not mean that you should leave everything lying around openly. Simply use all normal precautions you would also use at home.
Go up the West Coast or along the Garden Route at the East Coast.
Le Quartier Francais (http://www.safarinow.com/go/LeQuartierFrancais/?a=10986) is located in Franschhoek and has recently been awarded as the 'Best Small Hotel in the World'!!! It is a wonderful place to stay in the winelands.
