One of the poorer emirates, Ajman is mostly known for its cheap rents compared to Dubai and Sharjah. Consequently, part of the population that lives there is working in Dubai. The population of Ajman is mainly composed of students, expatriates from Asian countries and a few locals. Otherwise it?s one of the least attractive places to visit in the U.A.E. However, it?s also a cheap place to stay if you can?t afford Dubai or Sharjah.
Ajman Museum (admission 4 dinars)
An old police fort in the central square. Built in the late 18th century it has server as the rulers palace. In the 70?s it was put under usage as a police station. You can see different artifacts and reconstruction of traditional life. Besides the Ajman Museum, there is nothing much see in Ajman in terms of museums.
Just have a look around town you can find many things. Since this is not the main tourist destination there are no ?souvenir? shops. Otherwise there is always the Iranian souq were you can buy domestic goods and if you are lucky some interesting pottery.
India House (Sheikh Humaid bin Abdul al-Aziz St; mains 4 to 10 dinars)
Clean and cheap vegetarian restaurant.
As in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi alcohol is not accepted. Its sale is forbidden therefore if you are an alcoholic it?s definitively not the place to stay.
Tap water is considered ok but it has a slightly salted taste. The obvious reason is that desalination plants are used to provide tap water. More to the point, you can safely use it to brush your teeth and prepare tea.
Bottled water is also available in any descent store around town.
If you are planning to stay there and use it as base to visit Dubai expect traffic jams at rush hours. To get you an idea the average time to get to Dubai in rush hours is of one hour and more. Otherwise, only 20 minutes!
