What is the meaning of Northern Catalonia?

Northern Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya Nord; French: Catalogne Nord or Pays Catalan) is the name mainly used by Catalan-speaking community to refer the part of the historic Principality of Catalonia that is part of the state of France since the Treaty of the Pyrenees signed in 1659 between France and Spain.

This territory, part of the french Département of Pyrénées-Orientales includes the traditional comarques (minor regions roughly coincident with old counties) of Rosselló (French: Roussillon), Conflent, Vallespir, Capcir and half of Cerdanya (French: Cerdagne).

The administrative capital is the city of Perpinyà (French: Perpignan).

Northern Catalonia is one of the catalan-speaking teritories designed by the cultural term of Catalan Countries.

The Catalan language is estimated to be spoken by more than a quarter of the population and understood by over 40%, but it doesn't have the status of official language.

French is spoken by the whole population.
